MEET BLISS

Hi there! My name is Bliss and I am the creator of Hygge & Bliss. I am based in Kansas City, Missouri with my husband, Justin, and our 3 kitties, Chandler Bing, Milhouse & Sawyer. I have always loved picnics since I was little. My mom would pickup my sisters and me up from school, go to our favorite local deli to pick up sandwiches and we would head to our favorite park to sit and enjoy the beautiful weather. Ever since then, I have been addicted to the idea of creating the perfect picnic set up. Now, I drag my husband to parks on a whim for a picnic any time the sun is out and the weather drops below 80 degrees. My parents have both been the most incredible hosts my entire life. They have taught me how to create the perfect ambiance for any gathering through lighting, music, food, drinks and great conversation. I really wish they would write a book on hosting because they are truly professional hosts! Taking everything I learned through them mixed with my undying love for Romantic Comedies, I fell in love with the idea of creating a beautiful space where loved ones can gather and have the most magical time enjoying each others’ company.

the story of us

You know how everyone says “everything happens for a reason” and you just don’t seem to believe it in the moment? My journey has brought me to this moment where I finally believe that phrase (stick with me, I have a point I promise!).

In December of 2021, my mom put together these fabulous gift baskets for my sisters and me for Christmas. Inside the gift basket, was a picture frame with the definition of “Hygge” on it. I was not familiar with this term at the time and my mother wanted to teach us some of her favorite Danish words and phrases. The words in the frame read “Hygge [noun]: acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, at home or out, ordinary or extraordinary, as cozy, charming or special.” In the moment, I remember this phrase bringing me an immense amount of comfort - but I was not quite sure why.

Fast forward to March 2022, I was laid off from my job. I have worked a 9-5 my entire adult life, so it was a huge shock to not have a job to go to every day. This led to a large amount of time to think about what I wanted to do with my life. From the day after I was let go, I could not get the idea of creating my own business out of my head, specifically with picnics and hosting. After a month of applying to more corporate jobs and getting little to no responses, I finally decided this was my time to create something magical. After hours of thinking of what to name this company, I was drawing a complete blank. I wanted it to be something special that felt right and nothing good enough was coming to me. As I took a break, I bumped into my bookshelf and a couple of items fell off. One of these items was this picture frame my mother gave me with the definition of Hygge. I thought to myself, “this is it” and I had not one doubt in my mind.

Hygge is the Danish idea of feeling comfort & joy in life, no matter the time of day or time of year. My name, Bliss, means perfect happiness. I could not think of a moment where you could embody both things than gathering with loved ones in the perfect setting.
